I love beautiful tarot and oracle cards, so for each chapter of each novel I write, I draw a card from one of my decks and read it intuitively. For this chapter, I drew 6 of Swords – Heaven & Earth Tarot Deck. See the bottom of the page for information about the novel.

Muddled (Chapter 11 ), The Lost Teachings of Dead Monks
I’ve drawn the Six of Swords from Heaven & Earth Tarot deck to represent Charlie and his muddled head-space. The card shows a man guiding a boat across water, with a woman and child as passengers. Six swords are vertical, but they feel as if their points might pierce the boat and cause leaks. Six ravens circle ahead, but they feel as if they might instead be vultures waiting for bodies in the aftermath.
The card itself is in muted tones of gray, silver, and beige, with the words Earned Success to dictate the meaning to a less-intuitive reader. I feel nothing successful in this card, but definitely his situation is earned. Charlie obviously sees himself as the man taking the woman and child to safe harbor across the sea, and for that, he would see himself as a success. The card could also indicate his trip over water to return to Florida and take Rune with him.
But is Charlie the rescuer or the one in need of rescue?
This card doesn’t feel like a rescue or a trip to safety—it feels more like a fast trip into deeper waters in a sinking boat.
